Sean Gilmore Wins Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship

The University of Kansas Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to honor Sean Gunha Gilmore as the winner of its 2015 James Blackiston Memorial Graduate Fellowship and the chapter's nominee for a national Phi Kappa Phi fellowship.

Sean is a student majoring in Social Work. The Blackiston Fellowship is the latest achievement for Sean, a student vice president of the KU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, who has been highly active in the KU Alternative Break program and serves as a Hawk Link Tutor through the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Sean carries a 3.96 Grade Point Average and has received the Mary Ann Traiger, Multicultural Scholars Program Award and has been on the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the School of Social Welfare Honor Roll since her arrival at KU.

As a participant in the Ronald E. McNair Achievement Program, Sean has presented her work at the SAEOPP McNair Scholars Research Conference in Atlanta, GA and the KU McNair Scholars Program Research Symposium and the Undergraduate Research Poster Session at KU.

 Sean’s other activities have included serving as a member of the KU Marching Band, a mentor for Supportive Educational Services, an after-school care teacher at St. John’s Catholic School, an Intern at Pathway Family Services, and a Court and Shelter Advocate for the Willow Domestic Violence Center . 

Sean’s potential, clearly realized at KU, has been recognized for many years as demonstrated by her receipt of William & Monte Murphy, Multicultural Scholars Program, Endowment Merit, APIASF/Metlife Foundation, and Sam Walton Community Scholarships, among others. Sean is a recipient of a Hixson Opportunity Award and has been recognized as a Horatio Alger State Scholar.

After graduation this May, Sean, who was initiated in Phi Kappa Phi in the Fall of 2013, plans to pursue the Master’s degree with a major in Medical Speech-Language Pathology.
